Income Tax Return (ITR) Filing – Complete Guide for FY 2025–26 (AY 2026–27)

Income Tax Return (ITR) Filing Services

An Income Tax Return (ITR) is a prescribed form through which taxpayers report their income, taxes paid, deductions, and tax liability to the Income Tax Department for a financial year. Selecting the correct ITR form is essential because it depends on your income sources, residential status, and nature of income. Filing the wrong return may lead to notices, delays in refunds, or unnecessary compliance issues.

For Financial Year 2025–26 (Assessment Year 2026–27), the due date for filing ITR in non-audit cases is 31st July 2026, while audit cases are generally required to file by 31st October 2026 and transfer pricing cases by 30th November 2026, unless extended by the Government. Delayed filing may attract interest, penalties, and loss of certain tax benefits such as carry forward of losses.

    Who Should File an ITR?

Income tax return filing is generally required for individuals, firms, companies, HUFs, and other eligible taxpayers as per the Income Tax Act. Filing an ITR is also important for claiming income tax refunds, carrying forward eligible losses, applying for loans or visas, and meeting various legal and financial requirements.

    Types of ITR Forms

The Income Tax Department has prescribed ITR-1 to ITR-7 for different categories of taxpayers.

    • ITR-1 (Sahaj): Resident individuals with eligible income up to ₹50 lakh from salary, house property, eligible capital gains and other permitted sources.

    • ITR-2: Individuals and HUFs having capital gains, foreign assets or income, income exceeding ₹50 lakh, company directorship, or unlisted shares.

    • ITR-3: Individuals and HUFs having income from business or profession.

    • ITR-4 (Sugam): Taxpayers opting for the presumptive taxation scheme.

    • ITR-5, ITR-6 & ITR-7: Applicable to firms, companies, trusts, charitable institutions, societies, political parties, and other specified entities.

    Documents Required

Common documents required for ITR filing include:

    • PAN Card

    • Form 16

    • Form 26AS

    • AIS/TIS (where applicable)

    • Salary slips

    • Bank statements

    • Interest certificates

    • TDS certificates

    • Investment and deduction proofs

    • Capital gain or business-related records, wherever applicable

    Why ITR Filing Matters

Every taxpayer's financial situation is different. Proper verification of income, TDS, deductions, Form 26AS, AIS, and the correct selection of the ITR form help minimise errors and reduce the chances of notices from the Income Tax Department. Professional assistance also ensures timely filing, accurate tax computation, and maximum eligible tax benefits.

Whether you are a salaried employee, business owner, professional, investor, NRI, partnership firm, or company, timely and accurate Income Tax Return filing helps you remain fully compliant with tax laws while avoiding unnecessary penalties and future complications.
